Audio Unit Issue 219DE61

There had been a behaviour change in iOS 11 which introduced a bug on iOS level, causing Audio Unit plugins on iOS to render incorrect audio when doing a so called "offline" render. An "offline" render is used by most Audio Unit capable DAW apps by default when exporting songs from their apps as audio files. The symptoms of this issue are that the generated audio files contain long passages of silence and/or corrupt audio artefacts.
This issue is considered to be resolved. This document is just retained for historical reasons. If you have questions regarding this issue, feel free to contact us.

iOS Status

The mentioned behaviour change on iOS level seems to be intended to fix an issue where a frozen Audio Unit could tear down the entire system. Unfortunately this change also introduced the described bug when doing an "offline" render with Audio Unit plugins on iOS. Unfortunately for this particular bug on iOS level, there was no way for us to provide a temporary workaround for our Audio Unit plugins, so we really had to wait for Apple to react and address this issue on iOS level first.

In the meantime, Apple resolved this issue with iOS 11.3, but unfortunately it also requires changes to all Audio Unit plugins and also requires changes to all Audio Unit host apps (DAW apps). So simply updating your iPad / iPhone to iOS 11.3 is not sufficient for the described symptoms to disappear.

Audio Units' Status

We addressed the required Audio Unit changes with

In our tests with our app versions listed above and latest App Store version Cubasis 2.4.1, audio export with our Audio Units works now flawlessly again. So this issue seems to be resolved on our end.

DAW Apps' Status

As previously mentioned, also all Audio Unit host apps (DAW apps) need to be updated for this issue to be finally resolved. This is the current status of Audio Unit capable DAW apps concerning this overall issue, as far as we know at this point:

Cubasis

Steinberg addressed this issue in Cubasis 2.4.1.

In case you cannot update to Cubasis 2.4.1 yet (i.e. on older iOS devices), in case of Cubasis there exists a workaround for this issue for a longer time already. This workaround will cause the audio render to take much longer, but the audio result will be correct:

GarageBand

Apple resolved this issue with GarageBand 2.3.4.

Auria

WaveMachine Labs resolved this issue with Auria 2.220 and Auria Pro 2.22.
